Earthships the shape of things to come
Back in 1958 a close Harmony group called “the coasters” had a huge hit record with a song called Yakkity Yak – the first line of which was –
“take out the papers and the trash”
Well that was 1958 but now in 2016 everything has changed and “Earthships” – houses / homes built “Womble style” with the things that most of us throw away are the way forward if you have any doubts they could soon be dispelled when you watch “Earthships: self-sustaining homes for a post-apocalyptic US?” here are two examples of Earthships –
Earthships are cutting edge ‘green’ buildings, constructed using waste car tyres and other recycled materials. They use the planets natural systems to provide all utilities – using the sun’s energy and rain to provide heat, power and water. They are buildings that heat and cool themselves, harvest their own water and use plants to treat their sewage.
Hard to believe that these houses are built with the things we throw away ECO friendly and sustainable and just in case you thought they were only a US fad they have also hit the UK with Earthship – Brighton project.
The six principles of Earthship homes are –
1 Thermal / Solar heating and cooling
2 Solar and wind electricity
3 Contained Sewage treatment
4 Building with natural and recycled materials
5 Water harvesting
6 Food production
The Earhships Biotecture web site is full of everything you need to know if you think an Earthship may become your new dream home.
The concept is good but it is not a natural fit – yet- as a replacement for your typical three bed semi but maybe if we keeping creating rubbish the day of the Earthship may be closer than we think.
